Windows 10 Is Reaching Its Final Chapter — Are You Ready?

Written by Onecom | Sep 29, 2025 1:48:45 PM
From the 14th of October 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 – no more security updates, technical help, or new features. For anyone still relying on it, the deadline is fast becoming a liability.

But there’s a twist. Microsoft has recently extended free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for users in the European Economic Area, removing some earlier barriers to access. For many UK-based businesses, that buys some breathing space – but it is not a permanent fix.

What Does Windows End of Support Really Mean?

After the 14th of October 2025, your Windows 10 devices will still run, but they will become increasingly vulnerable. Microsoft will no longer issue protection patches, bug fixes, or software updates.

That means unpatched security flaws, growing compatibility issues with new software, and the gradual erosion of reliability.

For businesses, this is more than just a technical problem. It introduces the possibility of compliance and reputational risks. Customers and regulators expect secure systems, and leaving endpoints exposed could undermine trust or lead to data loss, financial loss, or both.

To soften the blow, Microsoft’s ESU scheme offers up to a one-year extension of critical security updates. However, for most users outside the EEA, the free option still requires syncing to the cloud or redeeming Microsoft Reward points. Local accounts are no longer accepted for ESU.

Your Options: Upgrade or Bridge the Gap

You essentially have two paths forward.

First, you can move to Windows 11, or newer hardware if your current devices do not meet the upgrade requirements (such as TPM 2.0, UEFI, Secure Boot, and compatible CPUs). For hardware that fails those checks, replacing devices may be the only viable long-term choice.

Second, you can enrol in ESU for a temporary solution. For devices that cannot yet migrate, signing up for Extended Security Updates gives you more time to plan. But do not mistake this for a permanent fix. ESU is designed to tide you over – not serve as a lasting support path.

Why You Need to Act Now

The longer you wait, the harder it becomes. Legacy applications may eventually stop working or become insecure. Unsupported devices can quickly become targets for attackers.

As other organisations modernise, the contrast in reliability and protection becomes more distinct. Acting early ensures your systems remain secure, compliant, and trusted.

Next Steps

If your organisation is still running Windows 10, now is the time to act. At Onecom, we’re already working with customers to plan smooth migrations – from mapping upgrades to Windows 11 through to replacing legacy hardware where needed.

Whether you upgrade now or use ESU as a short-term bridge, taking action today ensures you’re not left exposed when October 2025 arrives.
